Helen was born on October 2, 1927 to Francis and Margaret White of Washington, D.C. Her life was a tapestry of rich experiences and enduring relationships. A beacon of wisdom, humor and warmth, she touched our lives with her kind spirit and silly goose antics.
Helen’s journey began on what is now known as Andrews Air Force Base. In 1953, she moved to Floydada, Texas. Helen’s sister and brother-in-law, Ida Mae and Charles Day, had recently moved to Floydada after Charles’s discharge from the U.S. Army. She soon met and married the love of her life, Neal Bertrand. Neal and Helen built a loving home filled with laughter and cherished memories. Together, they raised their six children: Richard Bertrand, Glen Bertrand, Wendy (Tom) Beck, Penny (Larry) Ogden, Becky (John) Lowrance, and Jeff (Cindy) Bertrand. They had 12 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
An active member of the Floyd County community, Helen spent her Sunday mornings at the Floydada Methodist Church, but her sanctuary was her cheerful kitchen, a place where both laughter and storytelling were always on the menu.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Neal; her sister, Dorothy Amendolair; her brother, Francis White; and another sister, Ida Mae Day.
Helen’s departure is a profound loss to all who knew her, yet her zest for life and the joy she brought to every room will forever remain in our hearts.
