Rev. Hugh B. Daniel, 96, of Amarillo, passed away on Saturday, March 8, 2025.

Celebration of Life services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 5, 2025 at The Church at Bushland, with Pastor Jeff Ponder and Rev. Jim Smith officiating.

Immediately following the service there will be a reception for family and friends held at the church.

Hugh was born July 29, 1928 in Plainview, Texas, to Rev. Newton and Thelma Daniel.

He graduated from Lefors High School. Hugh knew early on that he was being called to serve his Lord Jesus. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree at McMurry University. He earned his Master of Divinity from SMU.

Hugh married the love of his life, Joy Huff, on September 5, 1950 in Panhandle, Texas. Together they raised two children, Dawn and Dane.

Hugh served the Lord as an ordained Methodist minister in the Northwest Texas Conference for 42 years. He pastored the following churches: the Clyde Circuit as a student pastor, Renner, New Home, Overton in Lubbock, Idalou, Tahoka, Lockney, Quanah and Lamesa. He retired while in Midland in 1993.

As a young man, Hugh achieved the rank of Eagle Scout through the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America. Hugh was an avid photographer, a talented wood carver, a skilled knife sharpener, and a gifted marksman. In 1955, he became the state marksmanship champion of Texas via by the Texas Rifle Association, competing against 64 finalists. Hugh’s love of outdoor activities included hunting, fishing, camping, and riding motorcycles and four-wheelers.

Hugh served as chaplain of the Texas Wood Carver Guild and co-led the “One Way Youth Camp” at Ceta Canyon for many years. He attended The Church at Bushland for the last several years and he was active in the men’s Bible study. Hugh was a man of strong faith who felt it was an honor and a privilege to dedicate his time and talents to serving the Lord. He will be remembered for his love of God, his belief in the Holy Spirit, his devotion to his family, and the service he rendered to the communities in which he lived.

Hugh was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joy Daniel; two brothers, Wesley Daniel and Phillip Daniel; and a grandson, Jordan Riley.

Survivors include his daughter, Dawn Riley and husband, Jerry, of Amarillo; his son, Dane Daniel and wife, Robin, of West Fork, Ark.; a brother, Sam Daniel and wife, Mary, of Seward, Alaska; five grandchildren, Zane Henderson and wife, Kate, Weston Riley and wife, Angie, Leeza Stone and husband, Tye, David Riley and wife, Anne, and Matthew Daniel and, wife Haylei; and five great-grandchildren, Jack, Mac, Raina, Raghen and Braydan.
