Durrel Wayne Fortenberry, 1934–2025

Body

Durrel Wayne Fortenberry, age 91, of Lockney, Texas, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, November 13, 2025.

He was born on September 24, 1934 to Robin and Ruth (Gill) Fortenberry.

Durrel marched to the beat of a different drummer. A proud farmer self-employed in the agriculture industry, Durrel was deeply connected to the land he worked. He found joy in tending to his garden and often shared the fruits of his labor with family and friends. Durrel was living on the family farm where he was raised when he passed from this earth to his Heavenly home.

Durrel had a passion for sharing the love of Christ through song, always lifting the spirits of those who would listen. We know he is singing in Heaven with his birth family, where all can hear him.

He is survived by his beloved sons, Donnie, Michael, Bryan and John Fortenberry, who will carry on his legacy of hard work and kindness.

In keeping with his spirit of generosity, Durrel donated his body to science at TTUHSC, hoping that his contribution would benefit others with their research. He will be missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to Cal Farley Boy’s Ranch, 600 SW 11th Ave., Amarillo, TX 79101, an organization that exemplifies Durrel’s commitment to his community and his desire to share with those in need.

Durrel was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alpha, brother Eldon, sister Darlene and grandson Eric.
