Vegan leather?

When I first heard the term, I supposed it was leather made from the hide of an animal that eats vegetables. Like a cow. Also, I vaguely pictured a vegetarian chewing on a piece of whatever it might be, sort of like the rest of us eat jerky and the way dogs gnaw on rawhide.

Clever marketing, I thought. The marketers have figured out a way to make leather attractive to vegans.
