Jourdan (J.D.) Childress was born in Titus County, Texas in 1859. He was the son of Obidiah (O.B.D.) Childress (1929–1909) and his wife Cynthia Ann (1833–1925). Jourdan was reared on a farm where his first recollections were of his father coming home on furlough during the Civil War.
