Gerardo (Jerry) Cervantes was released from his earthly bonds Sunday, December 15, 2024, at the age of 60. He was born June 5, 1964, in Lockney, Texas, to Felix Lumbreras Cervantes Sr. and Maria Alicia Rios Mora de Cervantes and was raised in the Catholic church.
A memorial service was held at Guajardo Funeral Chapel in Lubbock, Texas, on December 22, 2024, followed by a luncheon in Jerry’s honor at Buffalo Lake Marina.
Hardworking and loyal, Jerry was employed at Quick Stripe Paving for over 20 years. His family and friends, whom he loved with a full heart, were most important to him. He absolutely loved being a grandpa! Aside from his primary love for his family, Jerry had a lifelong love for music and his Dallas Cowboys. He followed in his older brother Felix’s footsteps and taught himself to play guitar around the age of 25. He went on to play a mean bass guitar to Felix’s killer rhythm guitar in several bands, namely The Dry Levee Band, and Bozo Tejino. His recent gigs were with The Funatics. On stage he was a force and rock star. To his nieces, nephews and grandchildren he was a rock star all day, every day.
He will continue to be loved and remembered by his children and grandchildren, those being: Amber (Billy) Jeremiah, Jaelyn and Nevaeh; Elijah (Marissa) Amirah, Clyden and Elijah Rey; Maria (Sabas) Lola Faye and Suzie Ray.
To his siblings Jerry was a character like no other from the moment he started walking and talking. Those left to forever cherish special memories growing up with Jerry are Jimmy Cervantes (Mary) of Floydada, Texas; Arcie Biggerstaff (Tom) of San Angelo, Texas; Martina Cervantes of Cocoa Beach, Florida; Elisa Cervantes of Austin, Texas; Felix Cervantes Jr. (Melissa) and Judy Cervantes of Bardstown, Kentucky.
His loving West Texas family also includes Lubbock nephews and niece Anthony, Joshua, Felix III and Krystal who, along with their children, were there for their uncle and their cousins during Tio Jerry’s brief illness, just as he had always been there for them throughout their lives.
Aunts Carmen Barrera from Rio Grande City, Texas, and Isabela Cervantes from La Villa, Texas; and numerous cousins in Texas, Washington and Mexico City will forever remember and continue to pray for Gerardo and the entire Cervantes family.
The following transitioned to the afterlife before Jerry’s passing: the love of his life, wife Donda Cervantes (August 2015); his beloved mother, Maria Alicia Rios Mora de Cervantes (September 2016); his strong, proud father, Felix Lumbreras Cervantes (October 2018); and best friends and bandmates Brent Adkins (October 2020) and Dolly Adkins (May 2024).
Special appreciation is extended to Rusty Cook and the Guajardo family. Thank you also to Crystal Ontiveros, who opened the Texas Twister Marina during the off-season and catered the luncheon for the Cervantes family. Acknowledgments are also due to all the close friends who offered their love and support during the family’s loss.
