Nita Cage, 1944–2025

Body

Nita Cage, 80, of Amarillo, passed away on Tuesday April 7, 2025.

Nita was born on August 15, 1944, in Lubbock, Texas, to Harlan and Virginia Cage.

Nita grew up on a farm near Dougherty, Texas, where her love of animals and the outdoors began. Nita loved animals of all kinds but especially cats. She was known to rescue momma cats and their babies when they needed her help. She last had four special kitties who were her loving companions during her later years.

Home was where Nita felt most at ease, and she took great pride in her surroundings. Whether it was working in her garden, relaxing on the back porch, or in her sun room, she enjoyed the peace of being at home. Nita’s home was a special place for her family as well. It was a place of many gatherings and wonderful time together.

She had a lifelong career with High Plains Baptist Hospital and Baptist Community Services in Amarillo, where she worked for over 40 years. Starting in housekeeping administration, Nita worked her way up to become the executive assistant, earning the respect and admiration of those she worked with.

Survivors include her two daughters, Tracy Riddle and her husband, Keith, of Lubbock, and Carey McMurray and her husband, Richard, of Amarillo; and two grandchildren, Jared Beach and his wife, Samantha, and Addison Riddle, all of Lubbock. Nita enjoyed being “Nana” to her grandchildren and her “greats.” Her great-grandchildren include Marley Beach, Raleigh Gillespie, and Ryker Beach. She is also survived by two brothers, James Cage and his wife, Kay, of Dougherty, and Wayne Cage and his wife, Pat, of Dallas. Survivors also include a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and close friends.

The family thanks the many caregivers who aided and encouraged Nita the past few years.

Special thanks is given to The Sycamore staff, the Ruby Slippers staff and especially her dearest friend, Lynette Plasencio.
