Gene Jones, 1940–2025

Gene Edward Jones passed away peacefully on June 10, 2025 at his home in Midland, South Dakota.

Born in Floydada, Texas, on October 6, 1940, to “RT” (Robert Toliver) and Eva “Annie” (Cumbie) Jones, he was the eldest of three children. He attended elementary school in Dougherty, Texas and began high school in Floydada.

At age 15 Jones moved with his family to Midland, South Dakota, where he resided until his passing. Gene graduated from Philip High School in 1959 and served 11 years in the Army National Guard.

He married Audrey Nemec in 1964, and they were blessed with seven children. In 1965, they started G&A Trenching, serving the rural community’s waterworks and excavation/ trenching needs until October 2019.

Survivors include his wife, Audrey; children Richard (Jesielene) Jones of Navarre, Fla., Lisa (Mathew) Foley of Pierre, S.D., Brenda (Todd) Jones-Nierman of Bennington, Neb., Edna (Roger) Dale of Midland, S.D., Linda (Brandan) Jones-Giltner of Meriden, Kans., Julie (Jeremiah) Jones-Whitcher of Buffalo Gap, S.D., and Paula Jones of Rapid City, S.D.; 18 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Nelda Ann Cleveland and Linda Sue Jones.

Services will be held July 3, 2025 at the Midland School Auditorium with Pastor Tel Saucerman officiating. Interment will follow at the Midland Cemetery.
