Mary Jo (Bonner) Sherman, “Momma Jo,” passed away peacefully, surrounded by her children, at the age of 90 on March 27, 2025.
Born on February 2, 1935, in Fieldton, Texas, to Eldred and Velma Pearl Bonner.
Mary Jo spent most of her life in Lockney, Texas. It was there, at Lockney High School, that she met the love of her life, William Kinsey Sherman. From the moment they met, they were inseparable. After graduating high school, the sweethearts married on June 4, 1954, and soon after, they pursued their college education before beginning their life together as farmers in the Lone Star Community. From 1959 to 2019, they built a life centered around faith, family, and the land they loved.
Mary Jo and Bill raised their five children with a deep appreciation for farm life. Though they once considered living in town, they quickly realized they were made for the open spaces of the farm. In 1975, fulfilling a longtime dream, Mary Jo designed the blueprints for their adobe home. With the help of their children and a few others, the house was completed in just eight months. That home, surrounded by the pecan orchard Bill planted, became the heart of their family.
A woman of many talents, Mary Jo was a gifted artist and pianist who enjoyed teaching others to play. She took art classes at Wayland Baptist University and found joy in sketching, especially capturing the moments of her grandchildren at play. In addition to farming, she raised sheep until the demands of their well-known pecan orchard became their primary focus.
Mary Jo’s greatest joy came from her family. She adored her grandchildren, often picking them up in her van for trips to the springs, where she would sit by the water, sketchbook in hand, drawing the laughter and love that surrounded her. As her family grew, her love extended to her great-grandchildren, whom she cherished dearly.
After losing Bill in 2019, Mary Jo found comfort in the home they built together, surrounded by memories of a life well lived. She had a special love for thrift stores and antique shops, filling her home with unique treasures from her many adventures.
Mary Jo was a devoted Christian whose faith was the foundation of her life, and she is now at peace in the arms of her Savior.
She is survived by her children, Karla Gayle Cunyus and husband, Jackie, Joni Kay Wilson, Mac Aaron Sherman and wife, Robin; and William Robert Sherman and wife, Melissa. She also leaves behind 13 grandchildren; 24 greatgrandchildren (with one more on the way); and her sister, Johnnie Mac Quisenberry and husband, Denny.
She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Mark Eldred Sherman, and the love of her life, William “Daddy Bill” Sherman.
We will miss you forever, Momma Jo.
