Body

Lora Dale Wells Tyer, 91, passed away Thursday, August 31, 2023.

Dale was born March 10, 1932, in Larned, Kansas, to Iva and Lloyd Wells.

Dale’s dad worked for Skelly Oil Company, and the family moved often. She graduated from White Deer High School in 1950, then from West Texas State University in Canyon in 1954.

On December 18, 1954, Dale married Charles Edward Tyer—a marriage that would last until his last day on earth 65 and a half years later. They raised three daughters, and both invested in the lives of countless students in Floydada ISD from 1955 to 1990. Dale taught different subjects at different grade levels and coached girls’ golf. Dale and Charles came to Floydada after college and never left.

Dale died quietly at home, a wish that her daughters and precious caregivers lovingly fulfilled.

Dale is preceded in death by her husband, Charles; her parents; and one brother, Bill Wells. She is survived by her three daughters and their spouses, Tammy (Tom) Hawkins, Tracy (Michael) Zachary, and Tana (Willie) Hayes. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and their spouses, T.C. (Julie) Hawkins, Lora (Chad) Kirkland, Miles (Jennifer) Zachary, Michelle Zachary, Nathan Hayes, Bethany (Nicholas) Cope, and Zachary (Natalia) Hayes. The 13 great-grandchildren are Kody, Kacy, and Trevor Hawkins, Kylie and Libby Kirkland, Kaden, Britten, and Easton Zachary, Trace and Khyler Wolfe, and Everly, Willow, and River Cope. Dale is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families.

A celebration service will be planned at some future date. A small, private family service will take place in the next few months.

If you wish to honor Mom, donations can be made to First Methodist Church of Floydada or a charity of your choice.

Recently Dale was accurately described by a grandchild as “the one that the family life revolves around. She did it in a quiet, background kind of way, but was just always so steady and so present and really the rock that made it go around.” Dale loved her family fiercely (and well) and we will miss her intensely, and she loved and trusted Jesus with her whole heart.
