1932–2021
MATADOR—Wilma Juanell Colston, 89, of Floydada, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, November 24, 2021 at Matador Health and Rehab Center.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 30, 2021 at the First Baptist Church of Floydada. Pastor Chad Lawrence of Faith Fellowship Church of Matador, Texas, officiated. Burial followed at the Floydada Cemetery under the personal care of Moore-Rose Funeral Home of Floydada.
Mrs. Colston was born September 9, 1932 in Floydada, Texas, to Thurman and Grace Williams Hamilton.
She grew up in Floydada and graduated from Floydada High School. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Floydada. On August 20, 1950, she married J.B. (Jake) Colston, who preceded her in death in 2006. They were blessed with a daughter and son whom they raised in Floydada, where her greatest pleasure was her family and serving her community and church family.
Wilma and Jake resided for a short time in Eden, Texas, after his retirement from farming and the Soil Conservation Service in 1985. Along with being a dedicated mother and homemaker, Wilma also worked outside the home at various times in her life at Lighthouse Electric, the Floydada Appraisal District, and later at the City of Eden, followed by the Appraisal District of Concho County.
She was awarded the title of Soil Conservation Homemaker of the Year in 1969. She was active in the Floyd County 4-H and served as leader for several projects while her daughter and son were school age. She loved to cook for her family, sew, knit and do multiple crafts.
Wilma will be remembered as a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother and “Ninnie” and will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Jake Colston, and three older sisters, Oneca Hamilton, Thelma Jo Potts and Ruth Gray.
She is survived by a daughter, Teresa Whittle and husband, Mark, of Floydada; their sons Nathan Whittle and wife, Kristi, and their daughter, Makinley, of Floydada, Matt Whittle and his son, Kaleb, of Floydada, and Tyson Whittle and wife, Billie, and their daughter, Rylan, of Ruidoso, New Mexico; a son, Dan Colston and wife, Lisa, of Tyler, Texas, and their daughter, Victoria, of Fort Worth, Texas; several nieces and nephews; and many wonderful friends.
