LOCKNEY—Billie Gayle Sherman Reay, beloved friend, wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away on February 27, 2021, at the age of 87.
She lived a full life, focused on Christ, and was a blessing to anyone lucky enough to have known her. She was described by everyone as the “sweetest person,” and her passing will leave a void in her family and friends’ lives.
A memorial service celebrating Gayle is planned for Saturday, March 13, 2021, at 2 p.m. at the Main Street Church of Christ in Lockney, Texas. Visitation will be held at the church following the service.
Gayle was born November 18, 1933 in Knox City, Texas, to Elfie Maud Meriwether Sherman and Lewis Kinsey Sherman. The family moved to Plainview, Texas, in 1940, and Gayle started school. The family eventually relocated to Lockney, Texas, where she graduated from high school in 1952. Gayle married Eddie Joe Fortenberry on June 6, 1952, after returning from their senior trip, and together they raised three children, Sam, Marcia and John.
Gayle loved her community. She was an active member of the Main Street Church of Christ for most of her life. Gayle enjoyed participating in the Athena Study Club, the Buffalo Grass Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and Floyd County Old Settlers, and she was vice president of the Texas Young Homemakers in the mid-1960s. Gayle started working for Lockney General Hospital in 1968 and was the hospital administrator from 1978 to 1982.
On February 14, 1987, Gayle married Lynn Boyd Reay, and together they loved 12 grandkids and 27 great-grandchildren between their combined families.
Gayle is preceded in death by her parents, Elfie and Lewis (Shorty) Sherman; her husband, Boyd Reay; her son Sam Fortenberry; her stepson, Joe Reay; and her brothers, Bill Sherman and Tommy Sherman.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Marcia and Keith Phillips of Lockney; son and daughter-in-law, John and Retha Fortenberry of San Angelo; stepdaughter and son-in-law Kay and Kyle Brock of Plainview; daughter-in-law Becky Fortenberry of Plainview; and stepdaughter-in-law Beverly DeBerry of Plainview. She was loved by her many grandchildren: Jenifer Golden, Tyler Phillips, Cecilie Pfluger, Adrianne Gleason, Eddie Lee Fortenberry, Grip Fortenberry, Trip Fortenberry, Ashley MacGillvray, Taylor Brock, Heather Carson, Mandy Bowen and Matthew Reay.
