Gary Don Carthel, age 83, passed away on Sunday, January 3, 2021.
A graveside memorial service was held at the Floydada Cemetery at 2 p.m., Thursday, January 7, 2021 led by Pastor Ken Peterson.
Visitation was held prior to service from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., Thursday, January 7, 2021 at Moore-Rose Funeral Home in Floydada.
Arrangements were under the personal care of Moore-Rose Funeral Home of Floydada.
Gary was born in Lockney, Texas on February 2, 1937 to Aaron and Estelle Carthel, and remained a Floyd County resident for most of his life.
He graduated from Floydada High School in 1955 and went on to attend Texas Tech University where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1960.
Mr. Carthel was a member of the Floydada City Council, lifelong member of the Elks Club, Citizen of the Year in Floydada, Texas in 2011, and was President of the Floydada Country Club at one time.
Gary was an accomplished farmer and businessman. He contributed to Floydada’s vibrant pumpkin history.
He was the rock of his family and was always someone you could turn to for just about anything even if it was just for a piece of “chewin’ gum”.
His hardworking nature and noble personality are instilled in his family, and everyone he met. He enjoyed hunting, visiting the beautiful mountains of Ruidoso, New Mexico, and always had a story from one of his adventures to share.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Aaron and Estelle Carthel.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Doris Carthel; son, Greg Carthel and wife, Michelle Carthel; daughter, Daintry Robertson and husband, Bobby Robertson; grandson, Garin Carthel; granddaughter, Carly Pruiett and husband, Dylan Pruiett; granddaughter, Devery Orologio; brother, Hulon Carthel; sister, Fleeta Shannon; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
