Saturday, Oct. 10
By Kortney DeBock/Manager, Floydada Chamber of Commerce—
Officially coined “Punkin Days,” this annual festival in Floydada honors one of the area’s most unique crops — the pumpkin.
The celebration of the harvest-time takes place every year on the second Saturday of October. This year’s event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 10. We are thankful to First National Bank of Floydada for being the official Punkin’ Days event sponsor.
Over the years, the event has kicked-off Saturday morning on the county courthouse square in downtown Floydada. Throughout the day, patrons enjoy a variety of arts & crafts booths, food booths, and any number of games and relay races—all of which feature our ‘Punkins’.
Each year additional activities are added. The festival starts on Friday night with the BBQ cook-off contestants seasoning their entries, and the chili cook-off contestants lined up for their start the next morning. Winners will be announced at 3:30 p.m. under the pavilion. This year’s cookoff will take place on the lot in between the EDC and First National Bank of Floydada.
The Lions’ Club Pancake Breakfast begins at 8 a.m. Saturday between Payne Pharmacy and First National Bank, then the festival shifts into top gear. Vendors open for business at 9 a.m. The day’s events include a Classic Car Show, Library Book Sale, Cow Patty Bingo, train rides, a Punkin’ Pie eating contest, a costume contest for all ages, Punkin’ auctions, bouncy house, all-ages bingo, doggy dance show, corn hole, Punkin’ toss, Punkin’ decorating, and a host of games for all ages.
Registration for the Classic Car show begins at 9 a.m. Entry for the car show is $20. All proceeds will go to the Floydada Fire Department. Winners will be announced at 3 p.m. under the pavilion.
Punkin’ Day doesn’t end when the vendors go home. Join the chamber in Floydada in the evening with the Floyd County Team Roping competition and dance to live music from Jason Nutt & HWY 70 and the Tanner Lane Band. Gate opens at 4 p.m. for roping contestants and competition starts at 4:30 p.m.
The dance will begin at 7 p.m. with Tanner Lane opening and Jason Nutt & HWY 70 will go on at 8 p.m. Admission is $5 person or $8 a couple, kids 12 and under are free. Concessions will be provided by Kurbside Eatz. Bring your lawn chairs or just pull your car in and join us for a fun evening of entertainment, dancing, music and good food.
Bring the whole family out to enjoy a unique celebration of Punkins’ and harvest-time.
The park ride service will be provided upon request by parking at the First Baptist Church (401 S. Main) and calling 806-983-3434 for a pickup.
