Get ready for back to school
Special to The Hesperian-Beacon—
August marks back-to-school season, an ideal time for both parents and students to start prepping for the school year ahead. With school starting up on Aug. 20, it’s important to get a head start before schedules become packed with classes, homework and extracurricular activities. Below are a few tips to help ease students back into the school routine.
Minimize the morning rush. Start waking children up on time a week or two in advance before school begins so they can get used to the schedule change. Make sure they have enough time to get ready and out the door so adjust the time in advance if needed.
Pack ahead. Pack each child’s backpack the night before to help avoid forgetting things the next morning. Make sure they have everything they need for a successful school day whether it’s supplies or their lunch.
Start the day with a healthy breakfast. Kick off the morning with a healthy breakfast that will keep each child going throughout the day. Try an omelet or oatmeal topped with some fruit – something that will fill them up and fuel them at the same time.
Set a goal. Whether it is to do better in math or to turn their homework in, a goal can be a fun way to motivate a child. Perhaps, set the goal with a reward in store such as playtime, television time or even a sweet treat to congratulate them for their hard work.
Make ground rules. Make a list of ground rules for the school year such as no television until homework is finished or put electronics away while studying. If you set them ahead of time, the student will more likely be able to stick to them.
