FLOYDADA—Former Lockney Longhorn and Abernathy Antelope coach Matt Rehkopf will soon be wearing green and white.
Rehkopf will be joining the Whirlwind staff this coming school year as a high school business teacher and softball assistant coach. Rehkopf graduated from West Texas A&M University and coached the Abernathy Antelopes softball girls last season where he finished with a record of 13-1.
A partnership with Coach Morales and the rest of the coaching staff is what Rehkopf found appealing about joining the school community.
“The good quality and tradition they have are the reasons why I wanted to come to Floydada” Rehkopf said. “I am excited. I think it is going to be a good year.”
One thing Rehkopf said he hopes his students and athletes will learn from him is that they can be themselves. When it comes to coaching, his main agenda is to ensure that his athletes are having fun.
“When you are having fun good things tend to happen. You start winning more games and it just snowballs from there.” “I simply want to bring my energy and teaching aspects as well as my athletic aspects to Floydada” he said.
Rehkopf said he likes working with the students and seeing the little improvements they make each day.
“I never thought I would be wearing green, but here I am” he said laughing.
However, Rehkopf won’t be alone on this new journey. His wife, Kristie, is the school counselor at Floydada High School. He said he is looking forward to working with her. The couple has two children.
