Emma and Amos Poole, natives of Lockney, are co-owners of Oh, Charlie, a women’s clothing store, located on Main Street.
Emma was a hairdresser for 10+ years. Upon learning she was expecting their child, she decided she wanted more financial stability for her family. Her and her husband had always talked about opening a clothing and boutique store and March 2018 seemed like the right time. Emma could work while also taking care of her son.
Emma’s husband, Amos, has previous experience with retail, working for Heart’s Desire and Clark Pharmacy, both also located in Lockney. Amos takes care of the accounting part of the business as well as working full time as a pharmacy tech.
Emma orders the supplies online as well as going to trade shows in Dallas. She hopes to go to a trade show in LA in the future. She buys a variety of brands to appeal to a wide audience. She supplies Oh, Charlie with things like lamps, clothes, furniture, and accessories like candles.
Oh, Charlie fills a need for Lockney that cannot be found elsewhere in town. Sometimes people need to go to a formal occasion or funeral and can get clothing quick, which they could not do if they had to travel to Lubbock.
Emma and Amos would like to expand by creating their own website and perhaps another store in another town in the future. Right now they have a FB page where their customers can view new inventory each week.
They each stress that this store is not about making a large amount of money but contributing to the community. Amos stated, “I think our store has given the town a little hope. We have customers from Lockney, but also from all around the surrounding areas.”
Emma says that, “I learn something new every day. You listen to your customers and take their opinions into consideration. You learn and grow from it. I love the feedback. I like to make people smile and brighten their day.”
