JUNE “JJ” JEFFRESS
June
“JJ” Jeffress of Petersburg departed this life on Thursday, August 5, 2010 at
the age of 85 years.
She
was born in Brady, TX on July 31, 1925 to the late Tom and Emma Brown. She was an active member of the Senior
Citizens and First Baptist Church of Petersburg. She also served as President for the Petersburg Library
Association. She married James
Jeffress August 14, 1943 in San Angelo, TX.
Her
memory will be cherished by two sons, Jim and wife, Sonja of Brenham and Tim
and wife, Rhane of Plainview; one daughter, Beverly Workman and husband, Wayne
of Lubbock; one sister, Bobbie Watkins, seven grandchildren, and eight
great-grandchildren
She
was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years on October 10, 2008, as well
as two brothers, T.B. Brown and R. B. Brown; and, one sister, Billie Myre.
Services
were held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, August 7, 2010 at the First Baptist Church in
Petersburg. Interment followed at
the Petersburg Cemetery.

LUCILLE
MAIER
Lucille Maier of Idalou departed this life on August 7, 2010
at the age of 97.
She was born on November 15, 1912 in Olustee, Oklahoma to
Charles & Lula (Evans) Poole.
She graduated as Valedictorian in 1931 from Olustee High School and
later married Clarence Maier October 29, 1936 in Clovis, New Mexico. He preceded her in death on March 11,
1980.
Mrs.
Maier owned and operated Shop-Rite Foods, a grocery store, in Hale Center,
Lockney, Abilene and Petersburg before retiring. After retirement, she built custom homes throughout the
South Plains area. She was
involved in the Civic & Culture Club and Garden Club, and was a member of
the First Methodist Church in Idalou.
Those left to cherish her memory are three nieces, Carol,
Cecilia, and Patricia Poole and her guardian, Yvette Ellison of Petersburg.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two
brothers, Don and Cecil Poole.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, August 9,
2010 at the Idalou Cemetery.

JACKIE CALAHAN
Jackie Calahan,
a native of Lockney, died August 1, 2010 after a long illness
Jackie attended
elementary thru high school in the Lockney schools. He attended West Texas State University, received his degree in
accounting and went on to become a CPA.
He worked and lived with his family in El Paso,
Texas from 1970 until his death.
Jack will be missed
by his loving family which includes his wife
Charlotte, the former Charlotte Brown of Lockney; his sons Darren Calahan of El
Paso, Kirt Calahan of El Paso; daughter Marcie
Sanchez of Austin, son in law Martin Sanchez and
grandson Alex Sanchez.
The family is having a
private service today August 2, 2010 at the Mt
Carmel funeral home.
MANUEL BARRIENTOS, SR.
Manuel
Barrientos, Sr., 63, of Floydada went to the Good Lord on July 21, 2010 in
Lubbock, Texas.
A
Rosary was held at 7 p.m. Friday, July 23, 2010 at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic
Church. Funeral Mass was held at 2
p.m. Saturday, July 24, 2010 at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church with Father
Angelo R. Consemino officiating.
Interment followed at the Floydada Cemetery under the direction of
Moore-Rose Funeral Home.
He
was born in Ballinger, Texas on October 6, 1946 to Salvador and Leeandra
Barrientos. He worked all his life
as a ginner and retired in May 2010 from Lorenzo Co-Op Gin.
Manuel
was a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and great
friend. He went above and beyond
to help others and put a smile on your face. He loved to dance, fish, travel and spend time with his
family and friends.
He
is survived by his wife, Ramona Barrientos of Floydada; two sons, Manuel Jr.
and wife, Crystal Barrientos of Floydada and Joe Luis and wife, Pam Barrientos
of Garden City, Kansas; two daughters, Sandra Barrientos, Rosa and husband,
Ramiro Sanchez, all of Floydada. 32 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He
is also survived by Olga Hernandez, three sons, Eugene and wife, Jo Ann
Hernandez, Oscar and wife, Ofelia Hernandez and Robert Hernandez, all of
Lubbock; five daughters, Norma and husband, Greg Sanchez, Jessica and husband
Abraham Tijerina, Amanda and husband, Marcos Fotelo and JoAnn Hernandez, all of
Lubbock, and Alice and husband, Gabriel Alvarez of Arlington; 20 grandchildren,
21 great-grandchildren and many brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.
He
will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

EMMA JEAN WALTON HALE
Emma
Jean Walton Hale, 78, of Lubbock and formerly of Floydada, passed away on
Tuesday, July 20, 2010, in Lubbock.
Funeral services were held at
10 a.m. on Thursday, July 22, 2010, at Resthaven’s Abbey Chapel. Entombment
will follow in Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation was held from 5 p.m. to

Jean
was born on March 19, 1932, in Rochester, Texas, to the late John Smith and
Clara (Anderson) Walton. She married Samuel Hale on March 21, 1952, in Clovis,
New Mexico. She graduated from high school from Rochester, and then went on to
attend college from Hardin-Simmons and Texas Tech University. She worked most
of her life in Floydada at Hale Insurance and Real Estate.
Those
left to cherish her memories are her husband of 58 years, Sam Hale; two sons:
Dr. Andy Hale of Lubbock and Randy Hale and wife Alison of Fort Worth; three
grandchildren: Laura Hale of Amarillo, Jennifer Hale of Lubbock, and JJ Hale of
Lubbock; a brother, John Walton of Lubbock; and numerous nieces and nephews.
JAY MCPHERSON
Jay McPherson, age 93, passed away
on July 18, 2010 at his daughter’s home in Palestine, Texas. Jay, also known as “Mac”, was a former
longtime resident of Midland, Texas.
Visitation will be from 1:00 pm
until 6:00 pm, Tuesday July 20, 2010 at the Moore Rose Funeral Home in Lockney,
Texas with graveside services held at 1:00 pm, Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at the
Lockney, Texas Cemetery. Rev. Kyle
Brock will officiate.
Arrangements
are under the direction of the Moore-Rose Funeral Home of Lockney.
Jay
McPherson was born June 20, 1917 in Alvarado, Texas to C.P. McPherson and Pearl
(Anderson) McPherson. When Jay was
6 years old, the family moved to Lockney, Texas where they farmed for many
years. Jay enlisted in the United
States Air Force in 1941 and served overseas in the European Theatre in World
War II until he was honorably discharged in 1945.
Jay married Margaret Kathleen Myers
of Lockney, Texas on February 10, 1943 and they made their first home in
Lockney. To their marriage were
born two children, Karen Ann Johnston of Palestine, Texas and Pamela Webster of
Midland, Texas. After World War II
ended, Jay returned to Lockney where he farmed until 1955. Jay then worked as a brick mason for
many years, building and operating the Lockney Motel and Restaurant before
moving to Midland in 1969. Jay and
his wife, Kathleen owned and operated Town & Country Cleaners and Mac’s
Liquors in Midland, selling them in 1978.
Jay then worked as a brick mason and as a greeter at Sams Club in Midland
for several years before retiring.
Jay
was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Ruel, Wiley, E.C. (Carl),
Mace and J.P. (Buddy) McPherson; and his sister, Mary Louise McPherson.
Jay
is survived by his wife of 67 years, Margaret Kathleen McPherson of Palestine;
his daughters, Karen Johnston and husband Dave of Palestine, Texas, and Pamela
Webster and husband Kenneth of Midland, Texas. Grandchildren Lecia Lopez and husband Oscar of Midland,
Texas, Tina Sorkness and husband Rick of Jacksonville, Florida, Jay Webster and wife Dawn of Pearland,
Texas, Dawn Pratt and husband
Jaime of Williamsburg, Virginia, April Patterson and husband Shannon of Palestine,
Texas. Great grandchildren, Tami
Evans, Megan and Joshua Lopez, Kyle Sorkness, Cameron and Katelyn Webster, Lexi
and Alex Pratt, Dakota and
Victoria Patterson; 2 great, great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Nettie
McPherson, Gwen McPherson, Sue McPherson and a number of nieces and nephews.

MANUEL "PAPI" ARELLANO
Manuel
“Papi” Arellano, age 76 was born April 6, 1934 in Musquiz Coahila, Mexico to
Antonio and Florentina Arellano.
He
passed away July 3, 2010 in Lubbock.
Funeral Services were held Thursday, July 8, 2010 at
Templo Getsemani Assembly of God in Floydada where he was a member. Services were held under the direction
of Moore-Rose Funeral Home.
Manuel Arellano worked as a farmer in
Floyd County all of his life until retirement. His passions included playing
the guitar, singing, the latest technology, and watching sports. He was a
loving committed husband, a wonderful father, a playful grandfather, and a
generous friend especially to those in his community.
To all who knew, the “Hermano Arellano”, he was
dedicated, resourceful, knowledgeable, industrious, hard-working, supportive,
and an above and beyond man. He
spent his life working to be an example to his children, his family, and his
community. He was a man of few words and words were not needed as he
demonstrated all of this through his powerful actions.
Manuel
Arellano is survived by his wife of 49 years, Juanita of Floydada; his children
Anna, Jesus Manuel, Justo, Tony, and Flora, all of Lubbock, Abel and wife,
Peggy of Lockney, Daniel of Floydada, Lidia of Plainview; ten grandchildren,
three siblings; and many nephews and nieces of whom he deeply loved.
ALFONSO "PONCHO" DE LA FUENTE
Alfonso
De La Fuente, age 62 of Port Arthur, went to be with his Lord on Saturday, June
26, 2010 at his home.
Rosary
services were held at 6 p.m. at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home in Port Arthur.
A mass of Christian burial was held on Tuesday, June
29, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church with the Rev. T.R.
Blanco officiating. Interment followed at Calvary Cemetery with military honors
by the Southeast Texas Veterans Service Group.
Alfonso
was born in Linares, Nuevo Leon, Mexico on December 1, 1947 to Manuel and
Dolores De La Fuente. Poncho married Ludivina Pompa on October 28, 1971.
He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic
Church where he was a former Eucharist minister. Alfonso served and honored our
country in the U.S. Army. He had retired from Time Warner Cable three months
ago after 25 years of service as a technician.
He is preceded in death by his father, Manuel De La
Fuente.
He is survived by his mother, Dolores De La Fuente of
Floydada; wife, Ludivina De La Fuente of Port Arthur; two sons, Alfonso De La
Fuente Jr. of Port Arthur and Alejandro De La Fuente of Beaumont; two
daughters, Ludivina “Tita” Cibrian and Jessica Ramirez, both of Port Arthur;
five brothers, Jose Manuel De La Fuente of Mercedes, Guadalupe De La
Fuente of Hart, Juan Antonio De La Fuente, Miguel De La Fuente and
Roberto De La Fuente, all of Floydada; seven sisters, Maria Santos Cuellar,
Rosa Maria Castro and Ofelia Hernandez, all of Floydada, Petra Trevino of
Edinburg, Dolores Trevino of Crosbyton, Estella Salinas of Del Rio, and
Hortencia Reynoso of Denver City; ten grandchildren; his mother-in-law, Margarita
Pompa, six brother-in-laws and two sister-in-laws of the Pompa Family, all of
Port Arthur.
We have lost a wonderful son, husband, father, brother
and grandfather and he will be greatly missed.
DULON L. SARGENT
Dulon L. Sargent, age 86, passed away Thursday,
July 1, 2010 in Plainview. A
private memorial service will be held at a later date at the Floydada Cemetery
under the direction of Moore-Rose Funeral Home in Floydada.
Dulon is preceded in death by both her parents,
L.A. Sargent and Myrtle “Assiter” Sargent.
Local survivors include her four sisters, Wanda
Hickerson, Iona Cooper Thornton, Almeda Woodward and Myrtis Cope; and several
nieces and nephews.

JOSE “CHEMA” MARIA CHARLES
Jose
“Chema” Maria Charles, 78, of Lockney, passed away in loving home in the
presence of family members, Saturday, June 19, 2010.
Rosary
was held at 7 p.m. Monday, June 21, 2010 at San Jose Catholic Church in
Lockney. Funeral Mass was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 22, 2010 at San Jose Catholic
Church in Lockney with the most distinguished Msgr. Antonio Gonzales and Father
Jim McCartney officiating.
Also
in attendance was a dear friend of Chema’s, Mgsr. Curtis Hoffman.
Interment followed at Lockney Cemetery under the direction of Moore-Rose
Funeral Home.
Jose was
born June 5, 1932 in La Grulla, Texas, near Brownsville. He arrived in West
Texas in the 1950’s. He married the love of his life, Anacleta Martinez, in
1956. Early in his life, he worked the land which he loved so much, for several
land owners. Always finding time to play hardball and softball with teams and
the Catholic Church.
Later on he
became a business owner. First owning the Bell Gas station, then the Gulf
Service station and finally the “Pool Hall”. All of which he always let people
have ‘credit’ without the use of credit cards. “Chema” was known as one of the
best pool players around.
During his
life he was a respected member of the Catholic Church not only here in Lockney
but throughout the Amarillo and Lubbock Diocese. Giving speeches about
leadership and living your life for God and family. He was one of the founders
of San Jose de Calasanz Catholic Church in Lockney. He was on the parish
council for many years. Served several terms as President and Treasurer of the
Sagrado de Corazon Mens Society.
He was a devoted husband, friend and
father-figure to many more than just his three sons. He is survived by his
wife, Anacleta, and sons, Joe Jr., Jaime, and Jacob; four grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren.
Special
mention to “Lala” Jaime’s wife who gave so much of herself to help take care of
Dad. She is looked upon as our sister.
CATARINO (RENO) CORONADO, SR.
Funeral
mass for Catarino (Reno) Coronado, Sr., 90, of Arlington, and longtime resident
of Floydada, was held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 10, 2010 at St. Matthew
Catholic Church in Arlington.
He
passed away at 7:45 p.m. Sunday, June 6, 2010.
Interment
was held at the Parkdale Cemetery under the direction of Moore Funeral
Home-Bowen Chapel of Arlington, Texas.
Reno
was known for his love of vanilla wafer cookies.
Survivors
include his wife, Basilia Coronado of Arlington; four daughters, Felisita
Settles, Margarita Guiterrez, Thelma Coronado of Floydada and Cecilia
Castillo-Cossio; eight sons, Catarino Coronado, Jr., Tony Coronado of Floydada,
Jesus Coronado of Floydada, Frank Coronado, Thomas Coronado, Ricky Coronado,
Sr. of Floydada, Johnny Coronado and Charlie Settles, Jr.; 36 grandchildren; 60
great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
LOUIS FRY
A
memorial for Louis “Coach” Fry will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 10,
2010 at the Melonie Park Baptist Church on Indiana
Avenue in Lubbock, Texas. Those who knew and loved him are invited to join the
Fry family in a joyous celebration of his life.
Louis
died on January 23, 2010, in his new home with his daughter and her family in
Thomasville, North Carolina.
He
was born in Artesia, New Mexico on May 23, 1933, and moved to Portales, New
Mexico, where he met and married his late wife, Emma Lou and served in the
Navy.
From
Portales, the Fry’s moved to Lockney, Texas, where he taught and coached for 17
years earning a Masters Degree from West Texas State University. They moved to Lubbock in 1977 and he
spent the remainder of his career with Texas Farm Bureau before retiring at the
age of 70.
Louis
and Emma Lou were married 57 years.
Fry
is survived by his daughter, Diane Bradford of Thomasville, North Carolina; his
son, Dan Fry of Austin, Texas, five grandchildren Jaymi Bradford LaGuardia of
Thomasville North Carolina; Justin Bradford of Denton, North Carolina; Kyler,
Ian, and Daniel Fry of Austin, Texas; and his brother and sister of Corona,
California .
