Body

“When I fly away,” is how she described her death; on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, Winona Allen flew away into the loving arms of her Savior in the presence and comfort of her daughters and their husbands. She was 89.

The memorial service was held at 2 p.m., Monday, April 29, 2024 at the Floydada Methodist Church with Pastor Gary Boles officiating.

Burial followed at the Floydada Cemetery under the direction of Moore-Rose Funeral Home.

The family held a visitation at Moore-Rose Funeral Home in Floydada on Sunday, April 28, 2024 from 3 p.m. through 5 p.m.

Nonie, as she was affectionately called by most in the last 30-plus years, was born on February 22, 1935, to Oran W. and Robbie (Lotspeich) Hatley of Dougherty, Texas.

She attended schools at Dougherty and Floydada, graduating from Floydada High School in 1953.

Winona began her career in 1953 working at First National Bank of Floydada for 15 years. She soon was introduced by a mutual friend to Doyle F. Jackson and they married on December 18, 1955 in Dougherty. They were blessed with three children, Marshall Blake in 1958, Brenda in 1961, and Jeannie in 1969. Winona and Doyle shared almost 27 years of marriage together before his passing in 1982.

In 1984, Winona began working for the 110thJudicial District Adult and Juvenile Probation Departments. Life surprised her with a second love, and she married Harvey D. Allen on May 14, 1989, in Floydada. She and Harvey relocated to Lubbock in 2001 following both of their retirements. Nonie and Harvey enjoyed 21 years of marriage before his unexpected passing in 2010.

Winona enjoyed serving others and had a gift for working with young children. During her earlier years she volunteered in numerous ways with FUMC in Floydada, directing preschool and kindergarten programs, teaching Children’s Sunday School, serving on boards and committees within the church and helping with Vacation Bible School.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church Floydada while raising her family, and later First United Methodist Church of Lubbock. Nonie felt a special connection to God and her faith remained unwavering throughout her life. She found solace in her morning readings and prayers.

Winona was known by many names throughout the years including Winnie, Mama, Mother, Mom, Grandma, and Nonie. Those left will remember her fondly for her spunk and sass, classiness, wisdom, and grace. Her blueberry muffins and chocolate cake were family favorites. She was very particular in wanting her makeup and hair fixed first thing in the mornings.

Nonie was a thinker and planned ahead. She enjoyed reading, drying flowers, and going to estate sales with Harvey; and she enduringly loved her grandchildren and great-grands. She thought of others more than herself. Nonie was at peace with her eternal life that was to follow, she didn’t hesitate to pray for her family with the hospice chaplain the day before she passed.

She was gifted a digital tablet years ago and a new world arose. While body limitations prevented her from being physically present at loved ones’ events, it enabled her to keep up with family and friends through pictures and posts. Nonie quickly learned how to message friends and family on her tablet. The family was so proud of her tech savviness and all loved sending Nonie messages and pictures. Nonie loved that she could continue to read and learn with her tablet, keep her mind sharp with games, and use it to look up things she wanted to know, even up to the days of her passing.

Nonie was preceded in death by her parents; son, Blake in 1966; and husbands, Doyle Jackson and Harvey Allen. What a joyous reunion when she joined them all!

Those left to carry her memories and continue her legacy are daughter Brenda Whitten and Randy of Tahoka, daughter Jeannie Young and David of Shallowater, stepson Mike Allen and Julia of Tahoka, and stepson, Norman Allen and Kelly of Lubbock; nine grandchildren, Bryce Bowley and Brittany, Kade Young, Brogan Young, Lindsey (Whitten) Garcia and Chris, Courtney (Allen) Baranowski and John, Macey (Allen) Duncan and Kevin, Lexie (Allen) Vivian and Mike, Sterling Allen, and Axie Allen; eleven precious great-grandchildren, Brody Bowley, Brett Bowley, Henley Zea, Ace Garcia, Reigan Baranowski, Rylee Baranowski, Palmer Baranowski, Lillian Duncan, Xander Duncan, Harvey Mac Duncan and Georgia Vivian.

Additional family are sister Maxine Markham; brotherin- law Dwain Jackson and Darla; sister-in-law Juanema Christensen; nephews Marty Faulkenberry, Ted Faulkenberry, Brian Jackson, and Greg Jackson; nieces Lauren Harry and Haley Skinner; and many loved cousins and friends.

In lieu of flowers, Winona requested donations to First United Methodist Church of Floydada, Tahoka City-County Library, or Hospice of Lubbock.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Hospice of Lubbock who cared for and loved on Nonie in her final days and her doctors that gave her many additional years with her family.
